Every time I get on the ice with them, I feel grateful—and reminded. Grateful that I’m still able to keep up. Reminded that I can’t do this the same way I did at 13.

The truth is: I don’t recover like I used to. A hard turn, a quick stop, a sudden fall—it lingers longer. I can’t afford those risks anymore. I’ve had to change how I play. Less reckless speed, more smart positioning. Less ego, more fun.

If I want more moments like this, I have to train for them.

That means staying in shape throughout the year—not just when I know a game’s coming. It means stretching before and after. Warming up properly. Being intentional.

Because these small opportunities—the spontaneous games, the pick-up skates—are worth it. They’re why I train at all.

One of my goals is to someday skate in a league with both of my sons. Not just watch them. Be on the ice. In the game.

Age is just a number, but preparation is everything.

Ask yourself: What are you training for? What memories do you want to be ready for when they show up without warning?

If you have a goal like that, take it seriously. Do the work now, so you’re ready when life hands you a jersey and says, “Get in.”

You don’t need to be perfect. Just be prepared. Keep your body moving, your mind sharp, and your priorities clear.

This was my reminder today. What was yours? Hack Your Health: An Algorithm to Better Energy | Paperback
